wheatless friday

another cycle in the garden as i went to campus after work and harvested the bird savaged winter wheat that i planted last autumn...the bird tape that seemed to work so well last year wasn't nearly as effective this time around...i have to wonder if that isn't due, at least in part, to the fact that there was much more wheat this season than last and so a bigger and more attractive target...whatever the reason between the stand on campus and what's in the back yard i will have more than enough seed to continue the "green manure"/ organic matter project to fill my raised beds...after i took out the wheat i put in some compost and planted some brussels sprouts in front of the jerusalem atrtichokes and tomorrow morning i will be planting a bit mote hopi blue maize and i will try the green oaxacan again...so far none has come up at home or on campus...which bothers me but it grows to maturity in seventy to eighty days so there is still time to bring some full cycle...the bottom photo is of the garden at about 5:15 p.m.yesterday...more changes as the season progresses...and no doubt some surprises too.
