garden news

stopped off at the garden after work to see what was up and as usual there is movement...the cucumber plant in the top photo is working on a third leaf and will begin thinking about vines soon...there is a plan for a trellis so the cukes will be going vertical and if all goes well there will be a wall of green vines soon...i finally see a strawberry plant putting out some runners to create daughter plants ( second photo )..curious to note that it is one that has not flowered yet and so is steering its energy to reproduction rather than fruit production...there are no stolons that i can find on flowering plants in the bed...one of the hopi blue maize replants is up and running ( third photo ) but i am not at all happy about the yellowish cast the plant in the fourth photo has taken on...on maize pant has already turned yellow and withered ( hence the replants )and i am not keen to lose another ...this is not weather that suits maize so hopefully it will warm and dry out a bit soon...last on the list is beets...five more are up in the bed with the hopi blue...beet lovers ( i will pass ) should stay tuned for harvest news...more as it comes up.
