autumn in thirty-two days

the strawberries aren't the only plants in the gardens on campus that are dropping broad hints about the approach of autumn...the "berries" on the asparagus "ferns" are beginning to look a bit rusty, and some have taken on a definite red cast that announces the seeds are maturing rapidly...ready for some fall "naturalization"...another fall planting we can do along with garlic and jerusalem artichokes if we have the room...across campus in the community garden the yukon golds have begun a serious dieback, announcing the harvest in imminent...someone has been harvesting sweet corn ( not squirrels...they take the stalk out at the base...see yesterday's blog about the fallen hopi blue in my yard for an example ) and a corn harvest is another sure sign of an advancing season...still more to come though...the season is never really over...there's always something to do or check on in the garden...and the garden in the last photo is a good spot to be in...there is life here.
