shang 2013

the last time i tried to grow ginseng was from roots that arrived in my mailbox the day the house burned..i was distracted during planting and although the roots ( at least the few i checked ) were still there this last spring they seem reluctant to sprout...this year the house is intact and i am taking the usda corn curator's ( mark millard )advice and working from seed...there is quite a bit of shade in the back jungle, which is why i try out shade tolerant plants like ramps and bluecrop blueberries out there...so i staked out some ground among the tree roots and leaf litter, twigs and thorns...and i planted around a hundred seeds this evening...two ounces of ginseng seed is a lot more than one hundred seeds so i will be doing more scouting for likely spots in the yard...i will not use all these seeds so if you have a shady ( 70% shade at least...no direct sunlight form mid-morning until evening...period ) well drained spot ( they do NOT like wet feet...my sub-soil is all sand so fruit trees and asparagus do well...so, i hope, will the ginseng ) give me a shout and i will share seeds..they are in the fidge now...slumbering until i find them a place.
