filling the beds

yesterday afternoon i hung around and helped ellen start moving soil form the old garden int the completed corner box in the new...this morning i went out there and did a bit more work and this evening i have done some ciphering...that box will hold 86.33 cubic feet of soil if we were to fill it to the brim...that won't probably happen so figure about 85 cubic feet...the beds in the old garden contain soil in an area about 4'X8'x8"...that works out to a bit over 21 cubic feet per bed or four beds of soil per corner box...so 8 old beds = 2 new ones soil-wise...which leaves four of the shorter beds...84 cubic feet... and the two larger beds..4'8'X16" or around 42 cubic feet of soil each to move before the old garden is paved over...we will need to build a few more beds yet if we are going to salvage all the soil...i suppose we could simply bring it over and create a pile...but the sooner we can put it to use the better...an uncontained pile will dissipate...or, at least, have some loss...the logistics of moving are being complicated by some time pressure...lots of work still to do.
