new garden bed

we framed in a 4' X 8' bed last weekend when we did the first corner box and yesterday morning i went to work on it...since it is only ten inches deep, as opposed to the eighteen to twenty-seven inch depth of the corner boxes, the first thing i did was to turn over and break up the grass sod to allow the vegetables' roots some access to greater depth and then filled the box ( after i lined it ) with soil from the old garden ( and some worms from the old garden that migrated with the soil...there will be no need to introduce worms into the new site and they will feed on the bacteria breaking down the organic matter in the buried grass )...after the bed was filled i transplanted some garlic from the old garden as well...it looks fine this morning and if it does well this coming week we should be home free...that remains to be seen...later in the day we dug a trench in the bed and ellen and i planted some russet and ollala potatoes...there will be german butterballs going in there and we will need to construct another bed for the reds, yukon golds, and the early blues...so the new site has its first "official" community garden planting...there will be quite a few more in the next few weeks...stay tuned and stop in to have a look
