fall green manures

in thirty-two days just about all the alfalfa i planted on the seventh of september has developed its third true leaf ( top photo )...good news as far as overwintering goes...the alfalfa patch continues to expand ( second photo ) and will, i hope, provide a fertile bed come spring...along the south side of the house there is plenty of seemingly self seeding winter rye ( since i haven't planted any ) along with nitrogen fixing new zealand white clover and winter vetch ( third photo )...always a lover of cooler weather, some of the winter vetch has begun to flower ( fourth photo )i have to wonder if i will be seeing pods before frost puts an end to it...if i don't this autumn, i will next spring.
